The land of Bucovina played an important role in the history of Romanians. Suceava, as a part of Bucovina, was the first battlement of Christianity against Tartar and Ottoman invasions.
The Romania Orthodox Church has played an important part in the social, cultural and even economic life of the county. Suceava has hosted since 1990 the Archbishopic of Suceava and Radauti with the suborditate Protopopiates of Suceava, Radauti, Falticeni and Cimpulung Moldovenesc and a whole chain of churches, monasteries, necropolises and hermitages across the county.
